This sculpture is dedicated to back up vocalists and musicians. Inspired by my friend Tonya Abernathy, an epic back-up vocalist who prefers to sing harmonies to lead vocals, I wanted to honor all the supporting musicians who often create the signature sounds we deeply love and recognize. This piece was commissioned by the Orion Amphitheater, a large new music venue downstream from Muscle Shoals on “The Singing River”. Muscle Shoals is home to music studios which, in their day, made the region famous as the ‘hit recording capital of the world.’ It was likely the house bands, and perhaps some magic in the land itself, that seemed give the songs recorded there something so special, that they inspired artists from all over the world to flock to this small southern town to record-.
